Chapter Seven

Damir felt Mikey’s confusion and grief like a building wave. The feelings rolled through him, lingering for a time before washing away and leaving behind a residue of understanding, a feeling of wanting to do something, before he felt eased. His mate was dealing well with last night’s misadventure.

Though Damir was not yet bonded to Mikey, he didn’t need to be. His gift was being able to hear thoughts, thousands at a time, but as he grew in strength and developed his gift skills, he found that he was able to tune in to the feelings attached to thoughts. With Mikey, their connection was simply different. As mates, Damir instinctively remained attuned even when not opening his gift and listening to his mate’s thoughts or tuning into feelings.

Leaving the specially designed room he occupied when using his gift, Damir jogged through the office building and entered the tunnels running beneath the ground and buildings. They were the quickest way, aside from flying, Damir felt. Berk and Dimitri disagreed. Nici didn’t care, and neither did Dareios. Sasa was adamant the tunnels were a maze and spooky, and Nix liked to lie down there in his alligator form. Leaving the tunnel, Damir hurried up the stairs and in through the back door of the family side of the building. He could hear Davor, Dimitri, and Mac talking.

Davor glanced over. “Mikey’s fine. I should see to his arm. He has no paranormal healing, and as the break was severe, I must monitor to confirm the correct fusing of the bone.”

Dimitri spoke. “Your mate had a worthy idea. He will list all of his contacts in the industry and reach out to a few close ones to see what they have heard.”

“You are certain he will be safe doing so?” Damir asked seriously. “Was his agent, Max, not shot because he was speaking to others in the industry?”

“Yes. I agree this is a great worry. We will keep your mate safe.” Dimitri rested a hand on Damir’s shoulder and squeezed briefly. “I know you will keep your mate safe and be working to find those responsible for his abduction. Do so in the confines of your gift room or safely in these walls, Damir. We do not know the magic and gifts of those we pursue.”

That was a reasonable point. There were many magics and gifts in the world and particular ones might be able to follow Damir’s gift back to him with the intention of bringing him harm or to shut down his gift.

“Okay. I’ll go be with him.” Damir turned to Mac. “Is there anything I should be aware of?”

“Just that Mikey might not show what is going on inside and talk about it, but that doesn’t mean he’s not experiencing a lot of feelings. He’s the one that doesn’t dwell and will lighten the mood. He will do nice things for others without letting them know what he has done. I just know Mikey needs some time, and then he’ll talk about what he feels, briefly.
